1080i
Within the world of television, there are a number of different resolutions that the HDTV’s use. Today’s HDTVS can display a various amount of high definition modes, such as 480p, 480i, 1080p, and 1080i. 1080i is a compound name which tells two different things about the resolution. The first portion, “1080″, represents the number of scan lines. There are 1,080 lines in the 1080i resolution, and these lines are the scan lines that go horizontally across the screen. The second part of the name represents the type of scan. The “i” in 1080i stands for interlaced scan. The other scan type is known as progressive, and in general progressive scan is the better of the two in terms of how good the video performs.
1080i utilizes a resolution of 16:9, which is a wide screen format. The total number of pixels that can be found on the screen is over 2 million. The 1080i resolution doesn’t actually have as high as a resolution as 1080 pixels should due to being interlaced. The interlacing process helps to remove the jittery blurriness that appears on your screen at times also known as “video artifacts”. These artifacts are especially visible when viewing lower resolution videos. The 1080i resolution can be considered high definition video, whereas 480i isn’t quite high definition.
The 1080i resolution usually runs at either 50 or 60 Hertz depending on the area. 60 Hertz runs video at about 30 fps, whereas 50 Hertz runs at about 25 fps. As technology develops, we are trying to move away from the interlaced aspect and focus more on progressive scan, as it is generally better than interlaced as previously mentioned. However, high definition televisions will most likely be continually produced with compatibility for some of the older resolutions, as many devises still can only output these lower resolutions, such as the 480i or 480p resolution.
