Yahoo has announced that they are shutting down GeoCities which they had bought for USD $3.4 billion back in 1999 in tech bubble days. The service never made any profit for yahoo and in the current global financial crisis and yahoo’s own problems, shutting down Geocities is probably the right decision.

Geocities has stopped new registration and accepting new members. The current members can continue using geocities till the end of this year though. With the end of geocities, one of the last pillar of early web of 1995 will get closed.
