Port Forwarding

Port forwarding is quite a simple idea. It describes setting up a network port to forward to another from one node to another. A popular use of this is forward external requests to reach a port on a private IP via a router.

An example of what can be done with port forwarding is as follows: You may set port 21 to forward to an FTP server set up in your private network so you may access the files using your external IP address. Other times, you may need to port forward a game’s TCP and UPD ports in order to play online successfully. You may even set up port forwarding to allow the use of a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which allows you to remotely control your computer. Windows and Mac have built in VPN function, but if you’re not satisfied with them, there are some nice programs that do the same thing, sometimes better. Whenever setting up a VPN, always remember to use a secure password, or else anyone could access and control your computer!

What is Active Directory

An active directory is a technology used as a method for storing information, trademarked by Microsoft and first used in Windows 2000 Server edition. It makes it easier for the end-user to manage data, and is usually utilized using the Microsoft Management Console. The user can complete tasks such as releasing patches, changing policies, or any other important actions.

The structure of an active directory is a hierarchy of objects. Under this framework lies three categories: users, resources, and services. These objects are all represented by a single item. That means that one of the resources may just be a printer (and its attributes). Objects may also contain other objects! The structure of an active directory is kept in what is known as a forest - this contains all of the directories objects, rules, and attributes . Within the forest, trees are held, which contain domains. When thinking of the structure, regedit (a registry editing program for Windows) comes to mind. The data structure of an active directory is similar to that, except instead of each tree containing registry keys, it contains objects. If you are familiar with this software, this may help you get a better visual.
