Backup of Yahoo Mail

If you want to take backup of Yahoo mail, first of all you need to download 2 open source applications YPOPs and Thunderbird. Download YPOPs from here and Thunderbird here.

YPOPs is an open source application that allows free POP3 and SMTP access for Yahoo! Mail. It’s not related with Yahoo’s existing POP3 or SMTP servers. You can use this with email clients like Outlook or Thunderbird. Here I’m going to explain how to configure YPOPs with Thunderbird.

So before continuing first install YPOPs from above mentioned link and Thunderbird, if not already installed. Now configure Thunderbird as mentioned below

1. First of all click on Tools menu and go to Account Settings
2. Next click Add Account button and select Email Account, and click Next
3. After this, enter your name and email address and click Next
4. Here choose POP and write ‘localhost’ as the incoming server
5. On the next screen, add your username

6. Next on the Account Setting window, click the Outgoing server (SMTP) and click on Advance.
7. Here click Add and type 127.0.0.1 as the outgoing mail server and 25 for port.

8. Authenticate your username and password. Remember to use your username as yourname@yahoo.com.

9. Next, check the ‘Use secure connection’ and click Ok.
10. Now from the Advanced setting, choose where you like your mails to go on the POP Tab.
11. Remember NOT to check “Use Secure connection (SSL)” or “Use Secure Authentication”

Now you are ready to access Yahoo mails from Thunderbird. Download all your mails and simply backup on your desktop. Unfortunately yahoo itself do not provide any such feature of backup of yahoo mails for free accounts, and though its expected that yahoo server is not going to crash losing all your info, still it is good that you take backup of all your emails and stored contacts.

Great, I was looking to backup my yahoo emails but this method is indeed very complicated and lengthy. I hope yahoo provide zip/rar functionality of its email so with one click we can download everything. Thanks for the article though
