Beginners Guide to MS Visio

Microsoft Visio is available in two editions standard and professional. Visio uses vector graphics for creation of diagrams. Estimated retail price for MS Visio 2007 is $260 and professional costs around $560. Upgrade price may be different from the retail price of Visio. Visio is very useful stand alone application for creating flow charts for business, engineering, general flow charts, Maps and floor plans, Network, schedule charts such as calendar, Gantt chart, Pert chart and Timeline charts. These different features have sub headings and already existing charts which help in creating a better work flow diagrams and charts.
Visio uses different formats such as VSD, VSS, VST, VDX, VSX, VTX and VSL. For diagrams VSL formats are used for add on applications to the main software. VSD is used for creating and storage of diagrams. VSS format is used for stencil shapes. VDX format is used for XML diagrams.
Microsoft Visio is not shipped with MS suite it is shipped separately with add on features. Organizational charts and diagrams can be modified and worked separately. Various different charts, diagrams, drawing, etc can be worked on MS Visio. Visio offers convenience and speed while working on charts.
Programs can be written in different languages to enhance the automation functionality of Visio. Languages such as VBA, VC++, Visual Studio and .NET can be used to perform repetitive tasks as such. Visual basic editor is present in Visio which can improve the functioning of Visio. External data can be incorporated into Visio from a data source, by linking shapes to data, displaying linked data graphically and by refreshing, updating, resolving, etc.
When MS Visio is started you will notice several features and other templates. On clicking on any of the chart you will notice on the right hand side Create option. On clicking on that option you will notice a white background drawing board with grids and rulers. On the left hand side you will have all different options which help you in creating a custom chart. Background metric, borders and tiles, charting shapes, etc will be present on the left hand side through which you can create your custom chart. In the view section you can customize different options such as task panes, rulers, grid, guides, connection points and page breaks. Macros can also be turned on accordingly.
