Some time back I had wrote about how you can open broken and corrupted rar files, now here is another software which can open broken and corrupted zip files to give you partial files. Most of the zip programs like winzip once encounter corrupted zip file exit the operation but 7 zip tries to recover the possible data from the zip file and is specially handy for media files.

7-ZIP is an open source archive utility and distributed under GNU Lesser General Public License. Basically it was designed for Microsoft Widows and supports all Windows version 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista. It works as 7z archive format and with the p7Zip format it has a command line version for Linux, FreeBSD and MAC. There are many frontend interfaces available for p7ZIP like Q7Z.

You can use 7-ZIP for personal and commercial use and there is no need to pay anything, but of course if you like you can always make a donation to help this project. 7-ZIP is the winner of SourceForger.net 2007 community choice award for “Technical Design” and as the “Best Project”. As per a benchmark, 7-ZIP 7z format shows best compression ratio compared to market leaders WinZip and WinRAR.

7-ZPI supports compressing and decompressing in 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR formats and can only decompress RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS.
