Burn DVD
While there are several methods to Burn DVD, one has to first decide what type of media they will be burning. Will it contain media (video, audio, pictures) data (computer games, text files, etc…) or perhaps a mixture of both? Also the type of media used comes into play.
There are a few different types of DVD for starters. There are DVD-R and DVD+R, and there is also DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
The difference between the “R” and “RW” is that while “R” discs can only be written to once before they cannot be used anymore, RW discs may be written to as many times as you’d like. That is, the data on “RW” discs can be erased and re-written.
The difference between the “-” and the “+” between the two is that the “-” disc can only have one layer written to, whereas the “+” discs, can have multiple layers written, which means it can store more information. The “-” discs are a bit cheaper, though. HP, Dell, Phillips, and a few others tend to support the +R discs, where companies like Apple and Pioneer support the -R format.

One piece of software that I would recommend is called ImgBurn. It’s a great piece of software that can burn multiple file types to DVDs, and best of all it’s free! Here is a description from the website:
“ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!
It has several ‘Modes’, each one for performing a different task:
- Read - Read a disc to an image file
- Build - Create an image file from files on your computer or network - or you can write the files directly to a disc
- Write - Write an image file to a disc
- Verify - Check a disc is 100% readable. Optionally, you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct
- Discovery - Put your drive / media to the test! Used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing”
As you can see, there are quite a few different functions involved with this software. If you need to burn an iso or perhaps a music CD, look no further than this software. It supports the Windows operating system, and if you’re running Wine, it should also be compatible with Linux.
