How to choose a Camcorder
Here is an article to choose a camcorder for you, which imo are a must along with digital cameras. Now most of the digicams already offer recording videos but the quality of the video can never be comparable to camcorders which are specifically meant for recording videos only.
Today there are so many camcorders on the market one may get very confused. Here is a guide to help you make a choice.
Let’s get one thing straight from the beginning: analog camcorders are of no use today! It’s very difficult to transfer the data to the computer and you have to buy lots of tapes. Just stick with the digital ones.
What kind of recording media should I choose?
There are many options to choose from. Some are more suitable for reuse, such as HDDs, and some are more suitable for long trips, such as DVDs. Let’s see them all:
MiniDV – it has 500 lines of resolution, 60 or 90 minutes of recording, standard definition video.
3 inch DVD – again, 500 lines of resolution, and recording times ranging from 20 to 60 minutes, standard definition video.
Hard Disk – in sizes from 30 GB up to 100 GB and even more with recording times of 41 hours and more. It can record in standard definition video and high definition, depending on the camcorder.
Memory card – like the HDD, standard or hi definition video but with smaller recording capacities (3 hours for a 8 BG memory card)
Apart from the recording media type there are other things you want to look for.
Battery – even if you have a 100 GB hard drive in you camcorder you won’t be able to record more than approximately 1h and a half with one battery charge, look for one with long life and even consider buying a second one.
Screen – a bright screen to be able to see it in bright light with touch screen for quick navigation.
Lenses – you want good lenses for a crystal clear image
3 CCD technology – instead of having one sensor for all the color this kind of camcorders use 3 different sensors for each primary color.
Optical stabilization – camcorders usually come with great optical zoom, up to 20x which is useless without stabilization.
Connectivity – you may need to connect external microphone, light and headphones, very useful in many situations.
No matter what you choose I am glad you read this article and you will make your choice wisely.
