How to Choose Scanner

I owns a HP all in one printer and scanner since I am not a power user anyway, but if you are looking to scan lot of images you should look to choose scanner which can fulfill your needs. Now most of the people don’t have idea how to choose a scanner since its not something which we do every month, so here a guide to help you to find best and suitable scanner for you.

These are the parameters on which you choose a scanner -

Resolution – While choosing a scanner, the most important part is the resolution. It’s measured in Dots Per Inch (DPI) in both horizontal and vertical. However, the resolution is not always same in both side and in general scanners are capable to provide more resolution horizontally compared to vertical. So typically it is measured like 600X1200, 600X2400 dpi and so on. In general try to choose around 1200X2400 dpi for high quality output. But, if your scanning task is limited to text only then you can go for lower resolutions as well.

Color Depth – The next important point is the color depth or bit depth of the scanner. Typically modern scanners come with a minimum of 24-bit color depth. Normally color and grayscale depths are quite symmetrical. For example, 24 bit color and 8 bit grayscale, 30 bit color and 10 bit grayscale. Now the point is, 24 bit color is good for scanning a color document but not enough for grayscale as the grayscale depth will be only 8 bit. So, if you need to scan both color and grayscale documents then go for minimum 30 bit color and 10 bit grayscale.

Interface – This point is directly not related with the scanning quality but the matter of speed. Modern scanners are now with USB interface. But look for USB2 if possible for more scanning speed.

Type of Scanner – Now many types of scanners are available in market to meet your exact requirement. If you need to choose a scanner mainly for very small papers and your budget is low then you can go with popular Handheld Scanners. Also there are other types of scanners like Sheetfed Scanners, Photo Scanners, Film Scanners etc. Meanwhile, few manufacturers are also providing multi-utility scanners for example, you can scan both photo and film on a single scanner.
