How to choose a Wireless Router
If you are looking to have your own wireless network in your home like I have or in your office, you need to choose a wireless router. For me, I got it from my ISP itself though I do had to pay money for it.
The evolution of technology inevitably came to wireless communication. Today we will stop and take a look on how to choose a wireless router. Everyone who owns a laptop knows is not much of a laptop as long as you have to stay with the internet cable plugged in – it just severs your mobility.
There are three key components you want to look for when you buy your new wireless router: Range, speed and security.
Range
Range is maybe the most important aspect of a wireless router. You have to take great care regarding this aspect or you may find yourself without signal where you need it most. The range of a router is decreased by walls, floors and ceilings and it gets weaker the further you get from it. Don’t fully trust the range it’s written on the box. Usually, those are lab tested and generated results and do not apply in real life situations. You want your router to have the “official” labeled range bigger than what you need.
Speed
Speed is a critical element when it comes to big file transfer over the network or streaming data. If this is not your case you don’t have to worry. Even the old type routers offer an 11 Mbps speed and the most encountered speed nowadays is 54 Mbps but it can go up to 300 Mbps. It’s up to you to decide what you need.
Security
Security of your wireless network is important but easily achievable. Your router’s configuration page allows you to set passwords and many have firewalls integrated.
Positioning
It’s very important to choose the position of your wireless router wisely, especially inside a building. You want it to cover all the areas you need.
No matter what characteristics you wish your router to have don’t rush buying the first one you find. Take your time to read some reviews and search for prices. Usually you can find a wider and cheaper offer at online stores compared to your local it shop. After you buy it do not forget to secure it!
