How to choose a Zip Drive

We all know what are zip drives, don’t we ? here is a article guide on how to choose a zip drive for you. For those who are not sure, a zip drive is a portable storage device developed mainly for back-up and archiving personal files. It was created and developed by the Iomega Company.

You don’t have much of a choice when it comes to sizes. There are only two options available: a 100 MB disk and a 250 MB disk. If you ask me, based on today’s standards, they are useless but some still use them.

If you want to use zip disks you will need a zip drive to read them. You have three different connections you can use: USB, SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) or parallel. USB provides you with the fast Plug and Play connection, the Small Computer System Interface has great data speed transfer and the parallel… well… it’s there to be. The parallel version can be connected between the printer and the computer so you can use both the printer and zip drive. There are zip drives with only one type of connection or you can buy one with multiple sockets.

The zip drives come cheap but the disks can get rather expensive considering the small memory capacity and the fact that you will need lots of them. As I mentioned before, due to their limited capacity they are best suitable for text files, emails, maybe small photos. If you need to archive big amount of files you should consider using DVDs or a second hard-drive (external for mobility).

Because the data is stored magnetically, just like a regular floppy diskette, you must keep them away from any electronic device to make sure you won’t lose your stored data.

The zip disk looks just like a floppy disk and the zip drive looks like a floppy drive. The only difference is the storage capacity. The zip disks also work as a floppy disk, they will appear as a removable device under My Computer.
