Cisco Switch Commands

There are quite a few different types of Cisco switch commands available for a few different types of switches out there. This will help to outline a few of the available commands between most of them.

Cisco Show Switch Commands

  • show version: This will display the hardware information on the switch. It will also display the software version.
  • show line console 0: Use this command when you want to find out information on a specific line of the switch.
  • show flash: This command will show all of the files and various directories in the flash of the switch.
  • show line: This command will display a tidbit of information on all of the lines of the current switch.
  • show interfaces: Using this command will show information on all of the interfaces of the Cisco switch.
  • show history: Using this command will allow you to see the last 10 commands that you used on the Cisco switch.
  • show interfaces fast Ethernet 0/x: This will show information about the interface used by the current Cisco switch.
  • show port-security interface [address]: I’m sue you can guess what this one does. It displays the current port security options that you may choose from/that are currently active.
  • show interfaces VLAN 1: This will display the configuration of the IP address for VLAN 1. Easy enough.
  • show mac-address-table: This little command will display the MAC addresses of any devices that are connected to any port of the switch. Sorting which is which is your job. :)
  • show running-config: This command will display the status of the current RAM on the Cisco switch.
  • show starting-config: This command will display the status of the current NVRAM on the Cisco switch.

Switch Configuration Commands

  • configure terminal: This is used to enter the global configuration mode of the switch.
  • password: The password command is used to set a password for any line on the switch.
  • duplex: This sets the duplex setting for the Cisco switch.
  • line console 0: Enters the specific line config mode.
  • hostname: Used to assign a hostname to a Cisco switch.
  • enable password: This command will enable a password to be set on the switch. Setting one is suggested.
  • enable secret: This is used to set the encrypted password used when entering privileged mode.
  • Interface fast Ethernet 0/x: Used for configuring the interface of the switch.
  • IP address: Used in configuring the IP address of the current switch.
  • Speed: Used to set the speed for the switch.
