This process can seem a bit confusing at first. However, there are many pieces of software out there that can help you complete this task. I will even discuss another method that doesn’t involve having  to install any software at all!

Different available software packages

• WME (Windows Media Encoder) - This file converter is provided free of charge via Microsoft. It can be downloaded for free from Microsoft’s website. Go here.
• Any Video Converter - This download is recommended, as it is straightforward and simple to use. The download can be found here.

How to convert the video using Any Video Converter

If you have installed Any Video Converter, I will list the steps involved in converting the video to better help you with the process:

1. The first step is to launch Any Video Converter.
2. Once it is up and running, click the “Add Video” button
3. A prompt will be brought up for you to navigate to the file and select it. Once you have it selected, press “Open”
4. The video will now be in your list queue. You may open several files if you’d like
5. Before converting, you may go to Edit -> Options and change the setting as you see fit. You can change the audio volume, the audio codec parameters, video settings, online video settings, and even subtitle information. If you’re not sure about any of this, it’s best to leave it with it’s default settings.
6. After you have everything set up the way you like, press the “Convert” button. The video will now be saved to the directory of your choice (The default directory is located under My Documents > Any Video Converter folder directory)
7. Congratulations! You can now sit back and watch it work it’s magic. It will inform you when it has finished converting.

Some other cool features included are the ability to convert videos directly from YouTube, Google video, Metacafe, and nicovideo. You may even import videos from your YouTube and nicovideo accounts!

An alternative to downloading software is to use the web based file converter known as Zamzar.com. In order to convert videos using this site, simply follow these steps:

1. For Step 1,select the file you would like to convert
2. Step 2, choose to convert to “wmv” format
3. In Step 3 enter a valid e-mail address. This is where they will be sending the download link!
4. Press the “Convert” button. The file will be uploaded to Zamzar’d servers and converted to the selected format, free of charge. Once it has finished converting, a download link will be sent to your e-mail.
