I just purchased a book for $20 from lulu.com only to find that the book is not a regular pdf file (as promised by seller) but it is DRM protected pdf file which can only be open with Adobe Digital Edition software.

Nowdays all pdf’s purchased are in digital edition format, which means, instead of you getting a pdf file, you get an acsm file which has the encrypted information about the pdf. Now you need to download Adobe Digital Edition and install it and double click on that acsm file (or drag and drop to Digital Edition window) and the pdf file will be open in it.

As much as I understand publishers trying to stop piracy, why should I as a legal suffer for it ? the digital edition version of books have lot of restriction and have very features, you can perform any action (no copy/paste), can not transfer the books to other PCs easily and not many handheld device are supported.

Anyway so if you have some books which are DRM protected and are in digital edition and wants to convert them to regular pdf files, here is a short answer from Adobe, You CAN NOT do it. There are some softwares which are claiming to convert such files to pdf but they do not work.

The only way I have found so far which is working is given by this blog. The person has reverse engineer the encryption code, decrypt it so you can use the decrypt key to unlock the digital edition epub files. I can’t talk more about this as breaking the DRM protected files is illegal and though I am not a US citizen, I still feels I should avoid talking about it but you can get all the information from that blog post.

Also please buy ebooks to reward the authors.
