Convert Fat32 to NTFS
Before I start, I’d just like to say that I am in no way responsible for any damages you incur (data loss, disk damages, etc…) from following these steps. These should only be referenced as a guideline for how this technique should be approached. If you agree with these terms, please continue reading on how to convert Fat32 to NTFS…
There are two main types of file systems: FAT and NTFS.
FAT (File Allocation Table) file systems are generally more “usable” in that you can transfer files easier from one hard drive to another, so you could say it’s more flexible as a file system. These were developed much earlier than the newer NTFS file systems.
NTFS (New Technology File System) file systems are more secure and also more stable than FAT file systems. The only con here is that they are not as flexible, and because of this files can not be transferred between different hard drives as easily.
Let’s move on to actually formatting your Fat32 hard drive to NTFS (WARNING: This will erase all data on your hard drive. Your music, pictures, videos, system files, everything will be gone once you format the drive.)
- First, make sure to backup any information you want to keep (pics, audio files, etc…). You may do this by means of an external hard drive or another form of storage. It doesn’t matte how you decide to store it, just always make sure before that the device will be have a large enough capacity to store your data before going out and buying anything.
- We’ll now need to open up the command prompt. Do this by going to Start -> Run, and in the “Run” prompt type in “cmd” (minus the quotes). This will open up command prompt, which we will use to execute a command in formatting the drive.
- Now in the command prompt, type in “vol” (again, minus the quotes) follows by the drive you’d like to be formatting. Ex.) vol d:
- Now type “convert” and follow that with the drive letter and “/fs:ntfs”. Ex.) convert d: /fs:ntfs
- If your operating system (i.e. Windows) is on the current drive you are trying to format, then it will ask you if you’d like to format on reboot. If you do, make sure to click yes.
- It will ask you to choose a drive letter. You can chose the volume letter you previously had (recommended) or enter a new letter.
- After you’ve entered the name you would like to user, press Enter.
- The conversion will then start. After it finishes you should be good to go!
Congrats on converting your FAT32 system to NTFS.
