GNU Image Manipulation Program or GIMP is the most powerful free image editor. Initially it was designed and developed for Linux graphics shells and later it comes with both Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X version.

Basically GIMP is used for image enhancements like resizing, cropping, color correction, merging multiple images etc and of course for designing purpose like creating brochure, logos, flyers, banners etc. GIMP also can be used to create basic animated GIF files as well. GIMP can be used for manipulating raster images and creating vector images. It is often used as a replacement of commercially popular application Adobe Photoshop for having most of its functionalities including around 150 inbuilt standard effects and filters like drop shadow, blur, motion blur. GIMP is now widely popular among print media designer and web/ desktop graphics designers as well.

From the 2.6 version of GIMP, it has introduced a vast change to the user interface and it’s now more user friendly. Also it comes with fully customizable feature; for example you can change the order of custom tools on the tool box, you can set icon sizes as you like and many more.

The native extension of GIMP is XCF and it supports almost all standard image formats like JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, GIF etc. The most useful feature of this application is, it can open and write Photoshop generated PSD files. In addition you can also work on Autodesk flic animations, Corel Paint Shop Pro formats with GIMP.

GIMP has a modified version called GIMPShop. Actually it is a version with few similarities with Adobe Photoshop by rearranging its user interface, renaming functions and rearranging menus; and on Windows this also has support for multiple document interface.
