Data Management includes various functions or processes involving the business data. DAMA the Data Management Associations have coined the definition for data management as “Data Management is the development, implementation and maintenance of the set of policies, principles, procedures and architecture surrounding the data of any business”.

Data Management involves various data professionals and various technologies and concepts to carry out the complete data management. The various operations or functions or aspects of the data management include

• Data Modeling – The process of designing the tables and database structure with the help of data base designers using modeling tools like Erwin involving the ER or Dimension modeling techniques.
• Database architecture – The development and implementation of the complete database system for a corporation with the help of the database architects.
• Database Administration – The database security, integrity, performance and implementation are maintained and monitored by set of skilled professionals called Database Administrators.
• Data cleansing – The method of cleaning the data from various sources to load integrated data into a centralized target.
• Data quality assurance – The process or set of rules implemented to make sure the data cleansing is carried out on a timely manner.
• Data mining – The process of gathering information from the business data and analyze the various perspectives to provide insight on the business patterns for increasing business profits.
• Data warehousing - The collection of subject oriented, integrated, non -volatile and time variant data to support any kind of business decision making.
• Data integration – Data from disparate data sources are integrated with the help of a single application for better business decision making.
• Data recovery – The process of recovering the data that are deleted from the database server by mistake or due to external factors to make sure business is not affected.
• Data backup – The process of taking necessary timely backup to ensure recovery in case of any data crash.
• Meta Data management – The process of managing the data about the data or the data dictionary or the Meta data of the database.
• Database performance monitoring - The development of database statistics by continuous monitoring of the database queries and network traffic.
