DHCP Reservation

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP reservation means that an IP address will be leased permanently to the client, server or hardware. DHCP reservation is configured in recommendation basis for the clients requiring static address.

Reservations could be managed with the equipments which are DHCP-enabled such as file, print, and few other application servers as these equipments are leased in the network with permanent IP addresses.

The Reservation

In general, a reservation consists of some detailed information about the client. The significant entities which are required for the inputs are: a name for reservation, which is allocated by the administrators for clients; the IP addresses which should be picked up from the range of IPs known as pool or scope; and MAC (Media Access Control) address of client, which is entered without any hyphens along with reservation account’s description.

Client Verification

The client can check his computer’s IP address by viewing the properties of TCP/IP.

  • The command ipconfig/all is used to check whether the IP address assigned by DHCP server is the IP address in real of the partner’s network connection.
  • The command ipconfig/release is used to set IP address free from the DHCP server.
  • The command ipconfig/renew is used for the renewal of IP address from the DHCP Server.

Some companies favor this set up, as the work of the administrator gets easier when he or she provides DHCP reservations to his or her clients. By this method client gets its reserved IP address from DHCP server whenever it is about to lease IP addresses.

By this way, the administrator doesn’t even need to go and work on each and every machine of the network and configuring their IP addresses manually. Rather this can be done on a central DHCP server by providing the MAC addresses to every client of the network which is available. A big advantage is present when using the all-reserved approach. This can provide better security as every client in the network has his or her own IP address. So it becomes effortless, interpreting the posted information in the logs of firewall.

In the last, if the company is having a policy to check the Internet usage per client then this can be traced easily by using the DHCP reservation. DHCP just leases the IPs to the computers automatically so administrator doesn’t have to panic and set the IPs of every individual computer.
