DNS Server (Domain Name System) are used to provide the lookup record in the DNS tables for the sites that you want to visit. While these are provided for you privately and automatically via your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you may also change them to a public DNS server. Changing your DNS to a different one may even speed up your internet connection! Alternate DNS servers may also be used to help filter unwanted pornography websites and other potentially malicious sites.

A free DNS server provider is OpenDNS. They are growing in popularity, and have a great service set up for the general public to use. They advertise their service as safe, secure, and reliable.

How do I change my DNS server?

If you’re running Windows XP, you can change your DNS servers quite easily:

• First, goto Start -> Control Panel
• While in Classic view, double-click on Network Connections
• Right-click on your Local Area Connection or main internet connection, and click properties.
• Go down and select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties
• Where it says “Obtain DNS server addresses”, click on the “Use the following DNS server addresses” mark.
• The type in the two address IP’s, as seen above. Which provider you choose is up to you. After you’re all finished, press “OK”.

After all of that is finished and set up, you should be connecting through the DNS of your choice, and everything should be fine from there!You may check your current DNS Server setting by doing the following:

Go to Start->Run, and type in “cmd”
Once command prompt is open, type in “ipconfig /all”
Look for the section named DNS Servers
If the DNS Servers are the same as the one’s you just previously entered, then the set up was a success! Alternativle,y this is a good to check to see what you’re DNS Servers are in the first place.

If you would like to set up an alternate DNS server on your whole network instead of just one computer, there are some other guides out there may may be of assistance for your particular router. Because each type of router (Belkin, D-Link, Linksys) works differently, you’ll need to find a guide that works specifically for your router. You should be able to find the make of your router by looking at the router hardware and finding a serial number located on it. This is important to know when looking for a guide.
