Google is cracking on this link selling since late 2007 and have reset page ranks of thousands of directories which were only built to sell links, For Google it is not that difficult to find what sites are selling links as most of the time the links are in sidebar and footer and are pointing to sites which are in niches like insurance, health, pharmacy, gambling, ecommerce etc.

Google also do manual review of sites and reset the pagerank to zero so they can’t pass any link juice which eventually reduces the ranking of the site and its pages.
