DSL Filter
A DSL filter is used to help block out any low-frequency interference that a telephone line may cause to the DSL system. These RJ11 jacks are plugged directly into the wall, and the phone and DSL line are plugged into the jack separately. Without doing this, the DSL connection may not work correctly, and this can be coupled with audible static interference when using the phone to carry out a conversation.
Because telephone signals operate on a range of 300 - 3400 Hz, DSL lines have a hard time when encountering such lower telephone frequencies on the same wire, causing connection problems and static. DSL typically operates at anywhere from 25 KHz - 1.1 MHz (that’s 25 kilohertz to 1.1 megahertz). The DSL filter is used by utilizing the initial signal from the wall and splitting in into a signal that both the DSL modem and phone can use separately, as intended.
The installation process is as easy as it sounds. There is no need for someone to come in and install it, and as such they are usually included by DSL providers with the modems they ship out. When I received my first DSL modem it came with two splitters enclosed, and a set of simple instructions on how to set them up.
Some simple tips on setting it up are listed below. If you have set yours up and it seems to be giving you trouble, make sure to try these out.
- When plugging the DSL filer into the wall, always make sure you have a clean connection between the the plug and the socket.
- When you plug the cable into the DSL port, turn on your router and check to see if you can get a connection.
- When you plug the telephone line into the phone port, check your phone line to see if you have a signal.
- After you’ve checked both lines and they’re simultaneously plugged in to the filter, you should be good to go. If you still have some static on the phone line or interference with the internet, try checking the connections and line integrity.
- Some people report still having a bit of static on the phone line after checking everything. Sometimes the only way to fix this is to try out a different filter.
- Using more than one filter to connect lines can also reduce the quality of your telephone signal. Try to keep the connections as simple as possible, without too many re-routes.

Never filter the actual DSL modem (filter between the modem and wall jack or line connection). It can happen, theres two jacks on most filters. Something to check if you have connection or speed problems. DSL filter limit is 5 or less.
