What is DVB-H
DVB-H is one of three existent mobile TV formats available today. It is a technology for broadcasting TV services to mobile sets. DVB-H was officially accepted as an ETSI standard EN 302 304 in Nov’04. From Mar’08, DVB-H was formally certified by the European Union as the preferable technology for terrestrial mobile broadcasting. Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) id one of the major contender of this system. DVB-SH & DVB-H2 are potential enhancements to this technology in the future, allowing better efficiency & improved modulation flexibility.
Technical explanation of DVB-H
DVB-H includes the very successful DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) system for transmission to digital terrestrial TV, with added functions to suffice the particular needs of handheld, battery-powered recipients.
DVB-H gives downstream channel at high data transfer rate .This may be used as complete or as an enhancement to mobile telecommunication system which any generic handheld mobile device is able to access.
Time splitting technology is applied to lower power use for small handheld devices. IP datagram’s are sent as data bursts in tiny time slots. Each burst can have up to 2Mbs of data, including parity bits. There are in total 64 parity bits for every 191 data bits, saved by Reed-Solomon codes. The front part of the receiving device switches on only for the time divide when the data burst of a chosen service is alive. Between this little periods a high data transfer rate is received which can then be stored in a temporary memory. This temporary memory may save the downloaded data or play live video streams.
The realizable power preservation depends on the relative act of the on/off timing circuit. If there is roughly 10 or more bursted applications running in a DVB-H data stream, the percentage of power saving for the front part can be up to 90%. DVB-H is a technical arrangement which was cautiously tested by the Validation Task Force for DVB-H during the year 2004. This technology has lately improved radio operations and can be projected as a development of DVB-H.
