E911
E911 or Emergency 911 system is a location detection technology brought forward by the FCC that enables mobile phones to dial a 911 emergency call and enable the emergency services to find the geographic position of the caller. Then the emergency team is dispatched to locate the person in trouble.
Basically 911 systems worked by pointing a caller’s position by the ground line phone number. Then that call is routed to the nearest Public Safety Answering Point and the agent at that point alerts the nearest emergency department to handle the call. With the advent of wireless devices, the existing 911 systems became inoperative and emergency personnel were rendered helpless in providing assistance. The life of the caller was also endangered if the cellular service in range refused to relay a call from a different service provider. E911 can locate the caller within 100 meters of the caller’s geographical location.
The Caller line Location Information supplied is normally unified into emergency dispatch center’s computer system. For wire lines it used to e an address but in case of Wireless E911, the location was a coordinate provided by the CLI. Though not all Public Safety Answering Points have the Wireless and Wire line systems integrated.
Wireless Radio location in mobile telephony uses signal transmission stations called base stations. This is done by triangulating between radio transmission towers. The location of the caller or mobile device is be checked by interpolating the distance from two or more towers and hence calculating the more specific location of the caller.
E911 started working in the year 1998 & was fully operational in the year 2001 as cellular service providers were mandated by the FCC to become compliant with E911 system.
The E911 service has turned out to be priceless in large cities with large subscriber base of wireless devices. The Police department, firefighters and emergency medical assistants have proclaimed its efficiency in finding people in trouble. E911 is specially helpful when a child is making a call from his parent’s mobile phone & cannot properly communicate a location.
