Ethernet Hub

An Ethernet hub is used to connect your computer into a network system. In general though, you will be able to find 4 different methods in which to create a network system. These are:

• Power line networking – which uses a power line to enable the computers to talk to each other.
• Phone line networking – the phone is used as the communications link
• Wi-Fi – which is wireless networking
• An Ethernet connection – uses either an Ethernet hub or a crossover cable for computer communication.

Of these four choices the last one is the one where you will be using an Ethernet hub to provide the communication ability for the computers. The first thing that you need to understand is that for this Ethernet hub system to work all of the required computers must be in a nearby location. The cable which is used in the connection process is called a crossover cable.

This cable is made up of five separate wires which are intertwined together and have a Ethernet jack located at the ends of each side. When you have found an Ethernet cable which is correct length and you have made sure that the Ethernet jacks are in place then your next step in fixing an Ethernet hub is to make sure that you have Ethernet ports to each of the computers to be used in the Ethernet hub. The best way to find this information is to look for a port which is similar in looks to the phone jack which is used for a modem line. There will also be a symbol that looks like a trident near the Ethernet port.

The cable will need to have one end connected to the computer and the other side will need to be placed into an Ethernet port found on the Ethernet hub. The hub is where the main communications will be taking place. As the data from one computer flows out of the cable it is relayed to the Ethernet hub. Here the hardware checks and decodes the data before it is passed onto the other computers in the network which have requested this information.

When you are shopping for a suitable Ethernet hub you will come across ones which have about 3 to 8 ports. These numerous ports will provide you with the ability of deciding on the number of computers that will be used in a network system.
