Another way is to use linkedin, using linkedin search you can find lot of companies in your niche to retrieve information like how many employees they have.

If you are looking for specifically US based companies, US securities and exchange commission puts all the filing of all the companies who are doing business in USA on the site http://www.sec.gov/, you can search the site at here to get valuable information of all kind including investment in the company too.
