FLV Files

FLV Files are flash video files and FLV means FLash Video. This type of video is commonly found in streaming video, on such like YouTube.com. This software was originally created by Macromedia, who is now owned by Adobe.

Viewing these flash video files requires the use of Flash player. You can download the latest version here. It’s important to stay up to date with the latest versions as they patch potential security bugs and vulnerabilities, and also help add new availabilities to your web flash player. Visiting that link should direct you to the current OS you are running, and you can choose to install the flash player for Internet Explorer or an alternate web browser, such as Opera or Firefox.

The FLV file type itself contains two different types of data: an audio bit stream and a video bit stream. The audio codec used in the stream is usually MP3 format, but also may contain AAC audio files. The video stream is usually encoded using the H.263 codec, which works well in handling higher framerates and higher quality video, making it a prime choice for a video codec.

FLV files are often used in streaming real time, as they tend to be lightweight and can be dynamically loaded onto your computer so that you may watch it even though you may not have downloaded the whole file yet. You can even skip around the file and load later parts you havven’t even downloaded yet. If you are running on a slower connection, such as 56k dial-up, you may have experienced the dielma of not being able to download the file as fast as you watch it, in which case you have to puase the video and let it load before watching it. As more and more people migrate to faster DSL and Cable internet connections, this situation becomes less of a problem.

Some advantages in using FLV videos on websites is that many people already have flash installed, so they will most likely be able support the content on the page without having to go out of their way to download the plug-in. Another advantage is because flash files tend to be quite lightweight, DSL and dial-up users should be able to load the files quite quickly. FLV files can also be streamed quite well on older computers, and small devices like iPods and things of that sort. Because these files are so easy to integrate, they’ll probably be supported for some time to come.
