Free to Air Channels

Free to air channels are free TV channels broadcasted through satellite for which you don’t need a dedicated expensive decoder to view. The signal is encoded in MPEG-2 format so don’t expect to receive High Definition television (HDTV). Keep in mind the fact that free to air channels are different from country to country. You will want to do some research about the channels you will receive from your location so you won’t be disappointed later.

In order to receive free to air channels you need some specific equipment:
-satellite dish
A cheap one which receives C – band and / or K – band will do the job but if you want even more channels you will have to go with an antenna motor and also a LNBF (low noise block converter).

-the receiver
You will need a special free to air satellite receiver which is designed to receive and “translate” the free to air signal for your TV. Remember, you will receive only free to air channels for more you will have to buy a satellite TV package. However, many people find those enough for them.

You can buy both the satellite dish and the receiver from any electronic store.
Installation
-Place the satellite dish somewhere in the open with a clear view to the sky – in your yard, on the roof of the house or attached to your apartment wall.

-connect the satellite and the receiver with a special coaxial cable.

-point the dish
Go into the receiver’s options and choose a satellite to point to. Based on those settings point the satellite dish towards the satellite itself. You may be required to update the firmware in order to have the latest information. Also, free to air channels keys have to be manually inserted so you have some work to do. If you find all these too difficult hire someone to do the job for you.

-connect the receiver to the TV
