HDTV is a digital broadcasting format for television system with higher resolution than traditional TV sets which are based on NTSC standard. It digitally broadcasts widescreen pictures with more detail and quality where as the previous one used analog mode for broadcasting. These digital signals use less bandwidth due to technological digital video compression.

There are various Types of HDTV displays, this includes, plasma TV, Flat panel LCD, Rear projection HDTV Displays. A HDTV display requires an HDTV tuner to view pictures of format 1080i. HDTV’s have video scalers which “upscale” or “upconvert” the transmission signal to the set’s native format
HDTVs can use digital signals made of binary values zeros & ones whereas analog signals made of waves which keep on fluctuating. Digital signals are not susceptible to interference from other electronic devices but analog signals are. They efficiently carry data that brings up the moving pictures. HDTVs have a higher resolution hence can display images with far more clarity than ordinary CRT TVs can.

High-definition televisions (HDTV) produce better-quality images than standard televisions, because it has a larger number of lines of resolution called pixels. Images in a typical HDTV are 2-5 times sharper and crispier because the intervals between the scan lines are narrow and almost invisible to human eyes. The larger is the HD display the better is its picture quality.

The native resolution used in HD LCD TV panels is 1366 x 768 pixels whereas the ATSC Standard has 1280 x 720 pixels. This is the reason why LCD manufacturers prefer to produce the 16:9 ratio compatible for the HD 1080p display standard. HDTV’s have an progressive scan processing circuit to restore resolution scaling & color rendering, like LG’s XD Engine technology & SONY’s BRAVIA Engine.

To view HDTV broadcasts, the viewer has to upgrade their traditional TVs which is little expense deal.Unlike analog televisions where broadcasting anomalies cause interference leading to image and sound degradation, anomalies in a digital television broadcast will freeze, jump, or display “garbage” data. This is sometimes called “cliff effect”.
