Hide Computer on Network

If you are on a network or LAN and wants to hide your computer on network from others to see that you are in the network, here is what you have to do.

[1] Windows Vista comes with a component named Link Layer Topology Discovery or LLTD protocol. This protocol helps to discover and map a computer on network.

[2] Next, go to the Local Area Network properties where you can see installed LLTD protocols as the screenshot below. As said, Windows use these LLTD protocols to map computers and other devices on network. So just disable LLTD protocols just by unchecking them.

[3] Now the network discovery turned off on your Vista system.

There is another method to hide your Vista computer; it is from the Command Prompt.

  • Go to Start Menu >> Run and type “cmd” (without quotes)
  • Now just type the following command on Command Prompt - Net config server /hidden:yes
  • On the other hand you can unhide by typing following commands - Net config server /hidden:no
  • Now just reboot your computer to effect the change.

The above DOS commands are also supported by XP and can take a little time to disappear your computer on network. In order to execute these commands, you should have enough right to do so. After hiding, you computer will work normally as before and will respond on PING command, but it will be invisible.
