HijackThis is a freeware utility program from leading antivirus firm Trend Micro. It lists contents of the key areas of system registry and local storage. These two are the main areas used by most hijackers. HijackThis scans the PC and lists changes on a text file that had been made or changed by any malware, spyware or virus. But, this program does not determine any thing nor asks you to remove any entry.

You need to find out illegal entries from that list. If you are not an expert then you take the log file and refer it to an expert or online forums.

HijackThis also lists all running programs that may be invisible in Windows Task Manager Process viewer. The program is frequently updated to detect and remove latest threats, so for better result, you can find for the latest version each time you need to scan.

It also helps you to make a full list of start up entries. If you find any bad entry, just remove it with a single mouse click. Also, if you’re not quite sure, HijackThis also gives you an option to backup that entry before you delete that. So, later you can restore it if you think it went wrong.

[1] Open process manager - lists all running process.

[2] Open hosts file manager - opens an editor for the ‘hosts’ file

[3] Delete a file on reboot - if you get the bad file, you can’t delete it until removed from memory. This option helps you to delete a file after restarting

[4] Delete an NT service - kills an NT service

[5] ADS Spy - it’s an inbuilt utility of HijackThis

[6] Uninstall manager - a small utility to manage software like Add/Remove program
