Hotmail Password Recovery
Sometimes in our daily routine, we get distracted and lose our thoughts. This can result in forgetting where you put your car keys, forgetting about the turkey in the oven, or even the dread “I forgot my password for my ______ account!”. If you have found that you forgot your password for your hotmail, then not all is lost, as there are a few steps that can be taken in regaining your password.
If you seem to have forgotten what your password for your hotmail or MSN account is, you can follow these steps in an effort to reset it:
- First, navigate to your account information page. You can do so by going to login.live.com
- Under the password text field, click the link that says “Forgot your password?”
- Here you will be asked to type in your email address (example@msn.com, example@hotmail.com, etc…) and also you’ll need to enter the letters and numbers you see in the picture into the “Characters” field. This is a test to see if you are a human or if you’re just some sort of bot trying to crack somebody’s password.
- After you’ve entered the info, click “Continue”.
- From here you can either send yourself a password reset email message or provide information to gain access you your account. We want to select the bottom choice. Click the link that reads “Provide account information and answer your secret question.”
- Here you can enter in the information you used when you originally made the account. You will be asked your country, State, Zip Code, and secret security question.
- After you’ve finished, click “Continue”.
- Now follow the instructions on this page in order to set your new password. There is even a tool to show if your new password is weak or strong. Tip: A super secure password should contain letters, numbers, and even symbols, and should be at least 14 characters long.
- After you’re all done, click the continue button.
- Congratulations! You’ve finished resetting your password. You may login to your account with the new password you chose.
In all reality, you can’t actually recover an old password, but rather help reset the password so you gain access to your account. This is because if someone was trying to hack into your account via the password recovery tool (i.e. the person knows where you live and knows you mother’s maiden name, perhaps), they could gain access to your old password, and then try that password on other accounts of yours, wreaking all sorts of havoc. It’s merely a security feature that most e-mail providers use to help keep you and your information safe.
