How does Satellite Television work
Satellite Television is a wireless system that relays TV programs by means of satellite communication.
The communication satellites which would be involved in the transmission
of television signals would have elliptical orbits or geostationary orbits. The
satellites would be in the space around earth at a height of 22,200 miles, thus
satellite TV has increased line of sight and less signal distortion.
The following steps are involved in the satellite TV broadcasting
and explain how a satellite TV works
1. TV Channel sources are the original sources that provide different TV programs and channels. The
provider doesn’t create the original programming; the satellite provider pays the programming companies like HBO or ESPN for the right to broadcast their content via satellite.
2. Broadcast center is the central hub of the satellite TV system. At the broadcast center, the Satellite
TV provider receives signals from various television channel sources and
then beams a broadcast signal to the communication satellites in earth’s orbit.
3. The satellites receive the signals from the broadcast station and rebroadcast them to Earth.
1. The transponders in the satellites receive signals from the broadcasting center antennas.
2. The transponders retransmit the signals back to Earth.
4. Each viewer’s home would have a dish set up (similar to older antenna in the broadcast TV) which picks up the
signal from the satellite and would be positioned in the home aiming at
the satellite.
1. The dishes have large diameters, to increase the signal strength which is been received from the satellite.
2. A device called ‘feed horn’ at the focal point of the dish collects the received signal and send it through the low noise block down converter (LNB)
3. The LNB amplifies the signal and converts it to a frequency suitable of transmitting over the IFL (intra facility link) which is the coaxial cable that connects the outdoor home dish with the indoor TV set.
5. The dish passes the signal on to the Television in the viewer’s house with the help of the LNB.
6. The receiver processes the signal and passes it on to a standard TV.
Thus satellite TV works and comes to life.
