How to make WindowsXP to Shutdown Faster

It is experienced by almost every Windows XP user that it takes a long time while shutting down our PC. But we can force Windows XP to shutdown quickly just by few minor changes in registry.

Actually if we shut windows down, then first of all it will close all running and open applications and by default some application has around 5-20 seconds of delay time before getting closed by the OS.

So, naturally if we can shorten that delay time we are done. Before changing anything on the registry value, always make a full registry backup.

Now, to open the registry window, just go to START->RUN and on the run window type “regedit” (without quotes) and run it.

On the Registry Editor, open HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Pane \ Desktop and on the right side look for the item called “HungAppTimeout”. Just double click this and you can see default delay time is set 5000 milliseconds, just change it to 1000. So, naturally it saves 4 seconds.

Next, find the item called “WaitToKillAppTimeout” and double click it. You can see the timeout is set to 20000 that mean 20 seconds. Change it to 1000 or 2000 whatever you like.

After this, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control. Here find out and double click on “WaitToKillServiceTimeout”. It’s also by default 20000 milliseconds; change it to 1000 or so.

Lastly go to HKEY_USERS \ DEFAULT \ Control Panel \ Desktop here also you’ll get the item “HungAppTimeout” and change the value to 1000.

Actually those delay times set high as 20 seconds just to allow those application to do maintenance processes during closing. But, you can always decrease the time. Now, just restart your PC and next time you’ll experience how fast you PC is shutting down.

But, as I told already, please create a backup of your system while making these changing, because by accident if you change other values it may crash you PC.
