How to Record Streaming Video

I love to watch streaming videos, :) I often listen songs on youtube and even watch movies online (see this and this),

I have a decent internet connection of 1 mbps which is enough to watch streaming videos and listen to streaming audio. Now sometimess you may want to download and record streaming video too, say if its a university lecture or some really long conference session which are not possible to watch in one sitting.

There are three widely used streaming companies with their distinctive streaming format: Microsoft, with Windows Media, Real Networks, with Real media – real audio and real video and Apple with QuickTime. All these companies provide both free and paid services for both Windows and Mac operating systems.

When it comes to record streaming video there is a wide variety of programs on the internet again, both free and paid. Some of them, such HiDownload and WM recorder, are even able to resume the recording but this only for seekable streams, not for live ones. The internet connection you have is very important because there is a lot of data do be downloaded. With a dial-up connection (who uses such thing anymore?) you may have to wait ages for a YouTube video to download. It is also important to specify your connection type to the download software so it knows how to approach the download.

After downloading it you will need the appropriate player to view it. All the three major companies listed above have their own players but you may consider using a universal player with incorporated codecs such as VLC player or KMPlayer.

Although the means of downloading streaming video are countless it doesn’t mean it’s also legal. Any video you find on the internet is protected by copyright laws unless it’s specified how and under what circumstances you may use and modify it. You can get in serious trouble by republishing or using videos in commercial purposes without the approval of the author.

There are two ways in which you can capture streaming video from the web to your PC.

One are the downloaders, softwares that offer you the option to download the video you are watching on your browser directly to your hard drive. The second are the video capture applications which allow you to select the part of the screen you want to record and grab the video from there. Tha main advantage of the video capture applications is that they can record DRM protected content.

I use a video capture app called 1AVCapture to capture streaming video and streaming audio to my PC. I like it exactly because it captures video and audio separatedely. But there are many options out there.

Here is a link to 1AVCapture:
