As a wordpress blog owner, it can be really frustrating when you link to one of your older post and you sees a self ping as a comment shown in your admin dashboard.

Self Ping are both good and bad and are equally liked and disliked by webmasters. One thing about them is that it can increase the number of page views and interconnection between your blog posts but many webmasters also feels that it is not necessary specially when you are using related posts plugins, which shows 5 related posts at the bottom of every post. Also self pings looks very intrusive and probably don’t add lot of value too.

Anyway if you want to disable self pings, you can do one of the two things -

1. While linking to posts of your own blog, do not use http:// but instead use relative paths. For example if I want to link to http://mwolk.com/blog/5-wordpress-plugins-for-adsense/ then I should use /5-wordpress-plugins-for-adsense/ and no self pings will occur.

If you are using visual editor, then probably the editor will automatically add http:// in front of it, for that, go to html editor and then remove it. Personally I feels its always good if you work in html editor only as it keeps your html clean.

2. Second method to avoid self pings is to use this plugin. You can check its homepage too to read the latest comment about it since I can see its an old plugin so may create some issues with latest wordpress install.

3. Another option is to use Wordpress Tweaks plugin. Its a very powerful plugin and provides way too many features and wordpress tweaks other then disabling self pings, so you should install it or at least look at its features once.
