HSCSD is the future of circuit-switched data useable for GSM cellular systems. This technology permits wireless data to be carried at a rate of 57.6 Kbps. HSCSD is presently available in more than 25 nations & is quite popular in European countries.

HSCSD uses multiple time slots to transmit data at the same instance, hence increasing transmission capability. More time slots means faster the transmission rate. These slots normally hold a bandwidth ranging between 9.6 - 14.4 kilobits. HSCSD can use at most four slots at a time, i.e. 57.6 kilobits of total data transmission speed. HSCSD is bounded to 38.4Kbps on a 900 MHz GSM network. It can only achieve 57.6Kbps on a 1,800 MHz GSM network.

HSCSD can only be used for data transmission apps & not voice related data. This is because voice transmissions always takes priority over data, so there can be situations when an HSCSD connection stops functioning as it should, since more slots are required for voice based applications. HSCSD transfers are more reliable than other GSM protocols. This is very useful for time sensitive transmissions like video streaming. HSCSD also encounters less interference from external sources as equated to other similar protocols, hence attaining both voice & data transmission of greater quality.

Though some different protocols, like GPRS have become more popular over mobile networks. GPRS technology is even more effective than HSCSD system & hence its used more frequently by organizations.GPRS has a wide market spread than HSCSD because of its cost factor alone.
Competing cellular phone companies try to get a market edge , as Using a highly-priced premium mobile service does not keep a company on the top, just because the charges are passed on to the subscriber. The subscriber is going to assess each service and make a decision based not just on quality factors but on cost as well because it often becomes a deciding factor.
