Install ActiveX
If you are running Internet Explorer, then you shouldn’t have to worry about installing ActiveX, as it come pre-enabled with the IE browser. If you are running another browser, such as Firefox, Opera, or Netscape, you will not be able to run ActiveX controls.There are workaround, but are not suggested as they may cause more problems for you in the long run.
ActiveX is a framework designed by Microsoft, and as such is only officially designed to work with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser. The controls work similar to what types of function’s Java code may run on your machine. This may allow to application to display an animation, or perhaps gather data of some sort. Because of the added control, many types of malware, spyware, and viruses tend to use ActiveX to install themselves on your computer via what’s called a “drive-by” download. This, coupled with the lack of support causes browsers like Firefox to just silently block any ActiveX controls that may be trying to run on a web page, whether they are legitimate or not. ActiveX controls may be written in any of the following languages by programmers, which is what adds the the versatility of the control itself:
- C++
- C#
- Delphi
- ATL
- MFC
- VB (Visual Basic)
Some basic controls that ActiveX may provide could be dialog boxes, buttons, or drop-down boxes.
Configuring ActiveX options in Internet Explorer
In order to set the desired ActiveX control preferences, follow these steps:
- While in Internet Explorer, click on the “Tools” option, and then choose “Internet Options”.
- Click the “Security” tab.
- Here you may set the slider in whatever security zone bets suits your browsing needs. It’s recommended that you have a security level of at least “Medium-High”.
- Click “OK” to save your settings.
The alternative way to run ActiveX in Firefox, Netscape, or Opera would be to download the ActiveX plug-in which can be found here. Only older versions of the browsers are supported, and you should avoid using it altogether, as using this plug-in with a different browser version can cause you serious problems. It is advised to take caution before downloading and using this plug-in. If you find that you desperately need to use a site that requires you have Active-X controls, then just try using Internet Explorer. Becuase IE isn’t exactly known for it’s security features, it would probably be best to stay away from hazy sites with Active_X controls as a whole. Stay safe!
