Internet Explorer script error

An Internet Explorer script error occurs when a script in either Java, VB (Visual Basic), or JScript fails on the client-side in some way or another. Usually this problem is caused by the coder of the particular web page, but in some cases it has to do with your browser itself malfunctioning.

While there are numerous reasons why you may receive a script error, it may may be able to be fixed on your end. If not, bypassing the error messages (read: ignoring them) may be your best bet at stopping these pesky nuisances from popping up on your screen.

First I will list some possible reasons why you may receiving these messages.

  • Java or active-x controls may be being blocked via an ad blocker or other browser add-on. Try disabling these programs/add-ons to and see if this fixes the error(s). You may also want to try updating your Java software, or maybe even try updating Internet Explorer itself.
  • Anti-virus software may also be the cause of such errors, as some are known to block certain internet traffic from accessing your computer or storing cookies via a firewall or other built-in security features. While it is not suggested to turn off your anti-virus software, doing so may help. Just use caution if you decide to try this method.
  • Another software related way to fix potential errors is to update DirectX or other similar applications.

If you have tried these options and the errors still persist, you may try to just turn off the error reporting for them. This may seem like a bit of a kludge, but sometimes it’s the best option.

You may be wondering what steps must be taken to change your IE settings. The steps involved in getting these script error messages to halt can be found detailed below:

  1. With Internet Explorer open, click on “Tools”.
  2. Navigate down the drop-box and click on “Internet Options”
  3. Click on the “Advanced” tab, which should be on the extreme right. You will now see a list of all of the advanced options.
  4. Now navigate down the list and make sure there is a checkmark in both the “Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer & Other)” boxes.
  5. Also make sure that there isn’t a checkmark in the “Display a notification about every script error” box.
