IntraLATA
IntraLATA is nothing but a telephone call or circuit which does not cross a LATA boundary. Simply speaking, it is a different name for local or regional calls. These calls are carried by the local phone company. The assistance of the Local Exchange Carrier is required for IntraLATA communications, but not the IXC (InterXchange Carrier).
IntraLATA calls can either be classified as a “local” call, or a local toll call (i.e. long distance call). Long distance calls in IntraLATA is not competitive compared to market forces as InterLATA (and interstate) long distance.
The general assumption of the people or the consumers is that the calls that originate close to one another should be cheaper than calls made from longer distances. But now efforts have been taken to make the InterLATA calling cheaper. That is they have offered calling plans that make IntraLATA calling roughly the same price as a local call.
Such type of packages are suitable for customers who make a lot of such calls per month. We must meticulously understand the advantages and disadvantages of such a plan before signing a contract as the line charges are generally higher.
Calls that originate in one LATA and terminate in another are called InterLATA calls. This type of call is mostly referred to as interLATA calls or “long distance”calls. For the reason that InterLATA communications do cross LATA boundaries, they do have the need of an IXC (InterXchange Carrier) to be completed.
More of the United States are now offering IntraLATA presubscription. This means that a carrier canbe automatically selected to handle your long distance calls. So there is no more a need of any old dialing methods. But not all central offices will need to provide presubscription. This is based upon the schedule of the local phone company.
During the 1990’s the competition rose in an exponential manner in the InterLATA and Interstate portion of the marketplace. Carriers now offer a wide variety of billing options and prices for Interstate calls have dropped considerably, including 6 second (and even 1 second) billing increments
Due to the FCC decision forcing issue in May 1999, all companies in United States offer intraLATA presubscription to their subscribers..
