What is ITIL
ITIL stands for Information Technology Infrastructure Library. It comprises of a set of concepts & policies for managing IT infrastructure. What exactly does it do? It basically provides guidance on the management & provisions of operational IT services. It acts as a framework that provides the best practice techniques to facilitate the delivery of high quality information technology services.
It is owned & maintained by UK Government Agency.
DESCRIPTION:
ITIL comprises of a series of books & manuals. They outline & provide explanation to the practices that most significant to IT services. These services are mostly management related. The main goal of ITIL is to provide high standards along with high financial quality in day to day IT operations. It includes the instructional material on IT infrastructure, operation & development issues.
HISTORY:
The need for ITIL was emerged in 1980s when the British Government realized that they are far behind in the field of IT & the present quality of service is not meeting their demands. Ultimately the UK government gave this task to Central Computer & Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) .They was tasked to provide more efficient & reasonable use of IT resources.
The earliest version of ITIL was called Government Information Technology Infrastructure Management (GITIM).
ADVANCEMENT:
During the early 1990s many large companies & Government agencies started adopting this framework. As the time passed it gained popularity & both Government & non government organizations started using it. Consequently it encompassed the whole world.
EXPANSION:
In 2001, version 2 of ITIL was released. Version 2 was sold in sets & it comprises of guidelines on different aspects of IT including application, services & IT management.
In May 2007, version 3 of ITIL was launched. It focuses on five topics namely service strategy, service design, service transition, service operation as well as continual service improvement.
ADVANTAGES:
There are many advantages of using ITIL but the most significant one is the saving of tremendous amount of money.
Secondly, it also helps in the organization & management of different disciplines using one comprehensive volume.
DISADVANTAGES:
Disadvantages are far less then the advantages.
Few people criticized that some topics are covered extensively & some have given very less importance, even their quality is not satisfactory.
Secondly, certain pragmatic solutions were skipped in that which ultimately affected the specific business needs.
Some computer experts argue that ITIL uses a holistic approach to IT practices, operations, computer network, computer software management as well as data management.
