Why get Laptop Insurance
Considering the fact that a laptop is built for mobility automatically exposes it to danger and the possibility of getting stolen. A good way to make sure you don’t lose your investment is laptop insurance as according to survey done by insurance companies, one laptop is stolen every 53 seconds!
But why get laptop insurance ? I have to underline from the beginning the difference between insurance and warranty, which doesn’t cover accidental damage or theft. When considering insuring your laptop you have to do some math to see if getting one worth it reported to the laptop’s value. There are additional costs for account management, paperwork and so on that you usually aren’t told from the beginning. It is a good thing to think about how exposed your laptop is to accidents or the probability of getting stolen is.
One of the most common problems is accidental damage. Sometimes this accidents can be somewhere on the fine line between insurance and warranty which will leave you with a broken laptop and empty pockets.
You need to be extremely careful when you sign the contract, you need do know exactly what your insurance covers and in what circumstances. Also, you have to know how your laptop will be replaced in case it gets ruined: you get a new one with the same or equivalent configuration or you are paid its value now on the market. Here is s list of accidents your insurance company may cover: accidental damage, theft, drops, falls, collisions, cracked screen, liquid spills, vandalism, fire, natural disaster. Based on the environments you use your laptop is negotiate your contract accordingly. Also, find out when it is covered. You may found that the insurance won’t cover your stolen laptop if you let it in your car with the doors unlocked or an open window.
Another way to keep track of your laptop is to use specialized software which runs undetectable in the background and sends information over the internet about the laptop’s location. Considering today’s thieves this won’t help much because the first thing they will do is search and disable such programs.

2Abhimanyu on Jun 15, 2009 :
I don’t think so but DELL, Sony, HP etc do provide extended warranty of 3 years (which you need to buy). Such extended warranties are available almost everywhere in the world so if you are not able to get laptop insurance, go for these extended warranties. As far as I know, in USA, Canada, UK there are lot of insurance companies which provide laptop insurance though.
