Laptop vs Netbook
I owns both a Dell Laptop and Asus Netbook so here is a post reviewing both of them. First of all, Notebook is NOT netbook, Notebook is just another name for laptops and netbooks are trimmed down bareback version of laptops.
Typical Configuration of Laptop
1. Laptops screens are atleast 14″ which goes upto 17″
2. Almost all of them come with minimum 160 GB Harddisk which goes upto 320 GB
3. Minimum RAM in laptop is 2 GB which often goes to 4 GB
4. They also carry powerful processor like dual core or quad core with 2.4 Ghz to 3.2 Ghz.
5. Most of them carry 6 to 9 cell battery and due to bigger screen and power processor, the battery backup time is much less of 3 to 4 hours.
6. they are often bulky and weighs 2 to 3 KGs
7. Due to lot of memory and processing power, any operating system can be run on the laptops.
Typical Configuration of a Netbook
1. Netbook screen size is much smaller and they come around 9″ to 11″ , 10 inch screen being the most popular one.
2. netbook normally comes with 160 GB hard disk though you can ask for upgradation too.
3. Netbooks normally come with 1 GB RAM, you can upgrade it to 2 GB but that’s pretty much it as they may not support RAM of 4 GB
4. Since netbooks are not meant for power use (they are mostly for people who wants to browse the web on the move), they only come with processor which takes very less power and hence all notebooks come with intel atom processor or similar processors.
5. netbooks come with 6 cell battery and often give backup time of 8 hours and more
6. Netbooks are very light and weighs less than 1 KG.
7. Due to less RAM and weak processor, new operating system like windows 7 may not run well on netbooks. I had checked HP netbooks and they come with both windows XP and Windows 7 and I think they are offering windows 7 as newbies may want to go with it even though it may be slow on 1 GB netbook. I have a Asus notebook and it has windows XP and it runs lighting fast.
Laptop vs Netbook
So which is better for you ? well if you go through above specifications, you can easily see we can not compare a laptop with a netbook, netbooks are only meant for business users who like to check emails and browse the web while on the move and you can’t do much else on them. You can not run lot of applications on them, you can’t play games on them and you can’t run too many multimedia applications on them like you can do on laptops.
I only bought a netbook to take backups of my laptop and to have a backup device for few days in case my laptop crashes. Also I travels a lot and these netbooks are perfect for travels as you can carry them with ease unlike laptops which are bulky and difficult to manage in flights.
A typical netbook costs in $300-$400 which is fairly cheap so if you are a power user I will highly advice you to go for them.
