Any vehicle in world has to have a License plate number. May it be government vehicle, personal or a commercial vehicle, it is mandatory for all to have a identification number written on the License plate. A license plate is mostly made of metal or plastic that is attached to a motor vehicle for official identification. This system of maintain a separate database for numbering all motor vehicles started in France in around 1890’s and followed by Germany. Now every country has a separate format which they follow for numbering, depending on their states and many other conditions.

Need for License Plate number: The need for a numbering system was felt when the motor vehicles started selling in the market. With increase in number of vehicles, it was becoming difficult for the administration to keep a track of vehicles being sold and to whom it is sold. Then the system of a License Plate number came up where every vehicle is assigned a unique vehicle registration number. This number can be numeric of alphanumeric code and should be unique in the region’s database. Some countries make sure that any vehicle number is unique in the whole country so that tracking becomes easy.

Rules followed for assigning License plate number:

a)    In some countries, it is mandatory for each vehicle to sport the License plate number in the front as well as on the rear.
b)    Some countries are very specific about the numbers and the number indicates the model, make, color, engine, fuel type, mileage and even chassis number are co-related with that. This makes it easy for tracking because noting License plate number is enough to find details of any vehicle.
c)    In some places, the License plate numbers are assigned permanently. The number simple indicates the region, and type of vehicle.
d)    If in case, any vehicle is no longer used, or destroyed, the number needs to be re-registered.
e)    Some jurisdictions are quite strict about the color of plates and color of numbers. The contrast and its visibility are given more importance.
f)    Some jurisdiction issues temporary license plate number for those vehicles that are awaiting registration process, or approval of some committee.
The System of License plate number is overall a very systematic implementation which makes tracking very easy and time saving.
