Linksys firmware
Firmware is software that is stored permanently in the read-only memory. This software may determine how a device functions, and/or what functions it is capable to doing. In essence, the firmware on your Linksys router is what gives it it’s functionality.
Upgrading your firmware when it calls for it is a very important practice that not enhances the way your router functions, but may also help keep your computer safe from hack attempts and other security flaws hat may be apparent in older firmware versions.
How do I upgrade the firmware?
A simple way to manually upgrade your Linksys router’s firmware would be to download a firmware update package from the Linksys website. Visit the companies website here and goto the “Support” section. It should then prompt you for your router’s serial or model number, which can be located on your router itself. After you’ve entered the number, you will be prompted with available downloads, drivers, and more.
An example of a Linksys router serial would be “WRT54G”. When looking for your model number, look for a serial starting with “WRT”, as that’s what Linksys router serials typically start out with.
Once you find your router, click the link that says “Get Downloads”. Here you should be able to locate the newest firmware for your router. Select the software version and then download it. If it doesn’t come with with an automatic installer (i.e. one that you aren’t able to double-click to run) then follow these steps to install the firmware manually:
- Login to your router page by typing 192.168.1.1
- Here you will be prompted to type a username and password. If you’re not sure of your username or password, you can try using he dafult password. On older router models, the username should be left blank and the password should be “admin”. On newer models, set both the username and password to “admin”. If you aren’t sure if you model is newer of not, just try using both.
- After you’ve logged in, click on the “Administration” tab.
- Now, click on “Firmware Upgrade”.
- Select the firmware update file from your download. The file is probably of .bin type.
- Click “Upgrade”. This process may take a few minutes. Be sure to not unplug or turn off the power to your router or computer while the update is taking place.
- After it finishes, you’ll be good to go. If the router is unresponsive after the upgrade, try resetting it.
