Linksys Router Setup

Setting up your Linksys router is an easy and painless process that should only take you a few moments to complete, unless you have some sort of hardware related error. Let’s just be optimistic as we go through the motions here.

How to setup a Linksys router

  1. First things first, take the router and all of its components out of the box if you haven’t done so already.
  2. If your router is a wireless router (that is, if it send signals to your computer wirelessly) then you’ll want to connect the antenna to the router at this point.
  3. Plug the power supply into an outlet and then plug it in to the router.
  4. Next plug in your internet Ethernet cable into the back of the router in the port that is labeled “Internet”. This should be the cable that is coming from your wall (the source point).
  5. Now take another Ethernet cable and plug it into any one of the port on the back of the router and then plug the other end into any computers or devices Ethernet ports. This takes the input signal (Internet source) and can split it up between different computers or devices.
*Note: Recent models suggest you insert the installation CD before starting the hardware setup. This is recommended, and it will also help to guide you through the various steps involved. You may use this setup as a reference, which should serve you quite well.

Next you’ll need to setup the router configurations, such as connecting to your internet service provider. The included setup wizard is nice, but may give ou a few different configurations setting options that you don’t need to worry about. Instead, try just opening up a web browser and navigating to http://192.168.1.1/.

This will bring up your login page. You will be prompted to enter your username and password. If you have an older router, the username should be set to blank (just leave the field empty) and the password should be set to “admin”. If you have a newer model, both the password and the username should be set to “admin”. If you aren’t sure which option to choose, just try both methods to see which one lets you login.

After you’ve successfully logged in , you can set up your internet settings in accordance with how you connect to the Internet. If you’re not sure on the setting, a call to your local ISP should clear things up.
