Mahalo Answers is a part of mahalo, a human powered search engine. For those who don’t know what is Mahalo, well, it has thousands of pages built for search engines on popular topics which are regularly updated. So say if the page is /London_Olympics_2012 then it will have all the information about london olympics, mostly through links to news websites and information resources of London Olympics. Critics of Mahalo says the quality of mahalo pages are not that good and the pages contains just links to various news sources. Anyway that’s the other issue, we will not talk about it right now.

What we are going to talk about is Mahalo Answers which has been introduced few months back. Mahalo answers is hybrid of Yahoo answers and now dead, google answers. People ask questions and the best answers get Mahalo money which you can redeem for real money (Mahalo do take 15% cut though!)

So lets compare both mahalo answers and yahoo answers feature by feature -

1. Number of Answers - Yahoo answers has millions of questions and answers so mahalo answers can not be compared with yahoo answers, I don’t even think anyway one can ever come close to yahoo answers as yahoo takes leverage of its huge userbase.

2. Time for reply - This the best feature of yahoo answers, you get reply in matter of minutes. How good the answer is, that’s a different question but you get instant reply so you can think of somethng else after seeing the reply rather then just waiting and doing nothing, unlike in many Q/A sites and in forums.

3. Quality of replies - This is the most important factor for any Q/A kind of website. So far, since mahalo answers is so new, its hard to comment on quality of answers of it. I had looked some of the answers and they looked alright but probably its too early to comment on them On the other hand, yahoo answers is full of good and bad replies. its just a big hotchpotch of too much content distributed to thinly. If you do search, you can find same questions asked tens of times with everytime you getting different answer. Lets see how does mahalo take care of this excessive duplication of content problem.

So as conclusion we can say, yahoo answers is way too established as compared to mahalo answers and mahalo still has to prove its quality, effectiveness and business model before we can compare it to yahoo answers.
