Microsoft has introduced a new image file format for digital photography with best possible quality and preservation. This new format known as Microsft HD Photo comes with many advanced features for digital photography.

It offers higher compression rate with around 2 times efficiency of JPEG format. So, basically a high quality imaging output with half size. On the other hand, HD photo format offers higher image fidelity with preserving the entire original image content and that enables higher quality exposure and color management. This HD photo format comes with the ability to decode only the information required for a specific resolution and/ or region. It also comes with an option to manipulate the image in compressed format which is a great feature itself.

Along with this new image format, Microsoft released a set of HD Photo plugings for Adobe Photoshop with the assistance of Adobe Systems. This plugins will allow users to view and edit HD Images with Photoshop. Curently the beta version supports both Photoshop CS2 and CS3 version and soon it will be available for Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X. This new format already included with MS .NET Framework 3.0.

Now the main question is how much this new image format will be acceptable and can it replace the most popular image format JPEG? However, it’s just a matter of time and personally I think it will be able to gain it’s own identity. Microsoft HD Photo format is also know as Windows Media Photo.
