mmc.exe

mmc.exe is an executable file that stands for Microsoft Management Console application. The mmc.exe executable file is concerned with displaying system management plug-ins where this includes the Device Manager and the Event Viewer. The mmc.exe is a vital process for the proper functionality of the Windows operating system; however it doesn’t require to be running for doing its purpose and the process can be killed if it is only causing a severe harm to the system. The mmc.exe executable starts up when you attempt to start an administrative tool. At some cases and cause of the presence of bugs on the operating system, the mmc.exe executable file can be running all the time at the back ground at the time it consumes a lot memory and it is recommended to terminate it.

mmc.exe is a Windows NT/2000/XP generic process and it is a core system file. You would need the mmc.exe executable file to manage lots of Microsoft products such as Microsoft SQL or Exchange server.

If checking the computer task manager for a certain username logging to the computer, there should appear only one mmc.exe in the task manager and if another one appeared with another username, this gives an indication of the presence of a malware but more than one instance of the mmc.exe for one username can exist on the system without any malicious program presence indication and with no harm to the system. Also, the mmc.exe executable file doesn’t run by default with the computer start up, it only runs when the Microsoft Management Console application is called for running, so it starts the Microsoft Management Console application.

The mmc.exe executable file is originally located in System32 subfolder or even directly in the Windows directory, other wise, if the mmc.exe executable file is found to be located anywhere else, then you are under a high risk for a virus, spyware, Trojan or worm infection. Maybe this mmc.exe executable file would be a worm and this worm may overwrite itself in the Windows folder, or creates a copy of itself in the Windows Temporary folder. This huge duplication of the worm makes the job of controlling it really difficult.

In case you would like to disable the mmc.exe executable file for any suspiciousness to be a worm or a Trojan, you can disable it through running the services.msc and then finding the process and disabling it.
