What is MMS
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. MMS is a telephony messaging system, used as a standard that allows transferring messages which contains things related to multimedia such as images, audio, video and also the content in SMS messaging.
It is primarily used in mobile networks along with almost similar messaging systems like Mobile Instant Messaging, SMS etc.
MMS is considered to be an expansion of SMS (short messaging service) standard & allows longer message lengths. WAP is used to present this message content.
DESCRIPTION:
MMS messages are delivered in the same way as does SMS message. The only difference is multimedia content is first programmed & then inserted into a test message. The message is then forwarded to the carriers MMS store & forward server. This store & forward server is called as the MMS relay. If the receiver is on the other carrier, then the relay will act as to forward the message to the recipients’ carriers by using the internet.
When it arrived at the correct receivers’ carrier, then this content is extracted & sent to a short-term storage server. A SMS control message containing the URL of the content is then sent to receivers’ handset in order to boost up the receiver. WAP browser opens & receives the content. And if the delivery report path is turned on by the sender then several other messages are again exchanged to indicate the status of the delivery.
Some mobile phone has special feather of “content adaptation” & its basic plan is to modify the multimedia content into format appropriate for the receiver.
MODE OF DELIVERY:
MMS is delivered in two modes. They are:
- Immediate
- Deferred
PERFORMANCE:
MMS faces a lot of challenges for its delivery. Challenges like bulk messaging, distribution list, WAP push, handset configuration & content adaptation.
DIFFERENCE FROM EMS:
EMS stands for enhanced messaging serve. It should not be puzzled with MMS.EMS is a type of SMS with added capabilities.
USAGE:
MMS provides complete multimedia information hence it boost the mobile communication usage.
With the advent of MMS technology, the user need not to confine his messages to text only.MMS is specially designed to function with GPRS.
Large numbers of applications are provided by MMS. They can be information, communication, entertainment and business related.
Audio video files can also be sent & receive easily by MMS. In the communication industry MMS is considered to be one of the leading potential money makers.
