Normal Blood Sugar Levels

Normal blood sugar levels - The level or amount of sugar keeps on changing throughout night and day. Normal blood sugar basically ranges between 70 to 110 mg/dl. The rise and fall of blood sugar level basically depends upon the kind of food an individual consume or the amount of exercise performed. There are a few tests of glucose which assists in measuring normal blood sugar levels in an individual’s body. These include:

* Fasting (Empty Stomach) Blood Glucose Test: This test is usually performed right in the morning, after the person has had at least eight hours of sound sleep. It is mandatory that the stomach is empty before this test is performed. The blood glucose level less than 110 mg/dl is considered to be normal. In case this level is detected to be higher than 126 mg/dl, it may be diagnosed as ‘Diabetes’. This is often confirmed after two tests are conducted consecutively. In case in both the tests, the blood sugar level exceeds 126 mg/dl, ‘Diabetes’ is normally confirmed. The American Diabetes Association, in 1997, changed the diagnosis level for the blood sugar from 126 mg/dl to 140 mg/dl, in order to confirm ‘Diabetes’

* In usual circumstances, the blood glucose level is measured to be in the low to mid 100 mg/dl. Other symptoms like unplanned weight loss, excessive thirst, excessive urination or fatigue also indicate high blood sugar problems. These problems are also diagnosed in case the blood sugar levels exceed 200 mg/dl.

* Another test to measure the blood sugar levels can be performed by oral glucose tolerance-test. After fasting, the person is required to eat or drink sugar water solution in order to measure the level of glucose in the blood. If a person is diabetic, then the blood sugar level will not fall instantly. And if a person doesn’t have diabetes then the level of glucose will rise, but will fall speedily after having the sugar water solution. Diabetes is diagnosed if the level of blood sugar exceeds 200mg/dl.

I like your article. Very concise and informative.

Just to add on to your article, that people might find useful:
    1. Fasting before the blood glucose test do not have to be an absolute fast. You are allowed to drink water. :)
    2. The OGTT test is done with 75grams of glucose diluted in water (any amount of water). It can be really sugary tasting! But it’s a good screening test as it’s easy to do and it’s quite sensitive to pick up problems.

    Hope that helps!

Yes, very good post and I also like Bruce’s response. I would just add that the fasting blood sugar test that’s lower than 126 but higher than 110 is not a clean bill of health. Further testing is called for in such cases, such as the OGTT — especially if you are overweight!

Hey, keep up the good work! We all need to keep up with the info on diabetes!
